Prof. Michael Kawooya is a radiologist. He holds a PhD in Health Sciences Research, {Makerere University} and an honorary Fellowship of the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (FAIUM). He attained full Professorship in Radiology at Makerere University. He is a founder member and current Director of Ernest Cook Ultrasound Research and Education Institute ( ECUREI) located in Kampala City, Uganda and affiliated to Thomas Jefferson Research and Education Institute in Philadelphia USA. He is also the Director of the Kampala World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) Centre of Excellence. He has authored over 45 papers, including publications in the British Journal of Radiology, the Japanese Journal of Radiology, the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound, and numerous journals throughout Africa. Michael has Co-authored chapters in books such as Radiological Safety and Quality: Paradigms in Leadership and Innovation (Springer Verlag) and Mason’s Tropical Diseases. Michael is also founder member for Uganda Society for Advancement of Radiology and Imaging (USOFARI) and Pan African Congress of Radiology and Imaging (PACORI) and African Society of Radiology (ASR).

He is the Patron for PACORI. He is the Chairman of AFROSAFE, a recently launched continental campaign for radiation safety.  He has participated in writing and developing several WHO manuals including the Ultrasound manual, the ICRQS-ISR Referral guideline for imaging (developed together with WHO), and a tool for  Radiation Risk-Benefit Dialogue  in Pediatric Imaging.   He is currently engaged in the piloting clinical imaging guidelines in Uganda.
